Shaun O\'Connor

Born in Australia, O'Connor relocated his studio to New York City in 2008 and that same year exhibited the painting installation project, New Thread with dianne tanzer gallery. The artist's first project with dianne tanzer gallery was Place Position in 2006, an installation of photographs edited from an ongoing archive of publicly situated inscriptions and marks. In early 2007 the artist held a solo showing of paintings, photographs and video, titled what else is there to do but go outside and look around at the Toowoomba Regional Gallery. In 2008 he was shown in Neo Goth: Back in Black, a large group show at the University of Queensland Art Museum. O'Connor is currently working through a Masters in Visual Arts research degree at the Queensland University of Technology.

New Thread - 2009

New Thread, Shaun's initial show with Dianne Tanzer Gallery as a represented artist is just that. O'Connor still wrestles with ongoing themes of public mark-making, gesture, and obscured script, but the maturation of his practice is evident. Shaun gives his register of found inscriptions a reductionist treatment in this large painterly installation where singular hand-made marks form a pattern of discordant rhythms with immense presence. The context of this progression is illustrated via a range of studies and supporting works.

Place Position - 2006

Shaun O'Connor is currently undertaking a masters in Visual Arts research degree at the Queensland University of Technology. O'Connor's process-driven practice is an investigation into the poetry and politics of mark-making and subsequent relationships to public space, sign systems and popular culture. These areas of interest are realised across a range of media and everyday materials in gallery installations, objects, painting, screen based and site-specific public projects. In 1999 he was awarded the Churchie Emerging Artist Prize and in 2003 he completed a three month artist residency at Stichting Kunst and Complex in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In 2006 the artist held his first interstate solo show with a show of photographs at Dianne Tanzer Gallery in Melbourne. In early 2007 the artist held a solo show of paintings, photographs and video, titled what else is there to do but go outside and look around at the Toowoomba Regional Gallery. O'Connor recently returned from a one month research stay in the United States. In July the artist will be taking part in Neo Goth: Back in Black a large group show at the University of Queensland Art Museum. The artist currently lives and works in Brisbane.
